Become a Certified Positive Psychology Practitioner (Level 5 Award / Certificate / Diploma)

Applied Positive Psychology Research / Online Courses / Positive Psychology in Practice

Positive Psychology is one of the fastest growing and most exciting disciplines within Psychology today.

Its approaches have now been widely adopted by the NHS and favoured as an approach by the CQC and the Care Act (see here). The applications go beyond mental illness towards mental flourishing within business, life, education, health, and relationships.

Positive Psychology transcends the emphasis on mental illness and puts the focus on optimal wellbeing and flourishing. It is one of the most holistic scientific approaches to physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. Its research includes mastery of fear, courage, resilience, authenticity, hope, and much more.

New research continues to evolve in the inter-disciplinary fields of Positive Education, Positive Health, Positive Neuroscience, and Positive Sport. As an applied science, it has much value to offer to individuals, as well as to families, communities, schools, workplaces, and even national governance.

Study the science of Positive Psychology for personal, academic, and professional development…

As a graduate from one of our Level 5 Awards in Associate Positive Psychology Practice, you will be equipped and certified to practice Positive Psychology with individuals and/or groups in an existing professional role or private practice using psycho-education and client intervention facilitation skills. If you are based in the UK, you will also be insured to practice and may apply to join the Positive Psychology Guild Register of Practitioners.

PPG has a strong relationship with Bucks New University which runs one of the Positive Psychology Courses at Masters degree level in the UK. Our Level 5 Positive Psychology diplomas prepare students to engage in a Masters of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) MSc degree course. Should you wish to progress to a MAPP following certification, PPG will provide an academic reference on your behalf. Acceptance will be subject to the usual University checks.

1. Professional Education

The Level 5 Awards in Positive Psychology Practice will provide you with a theoretical and practical understanding of some of the main subjects in Positive Psychology today. They are designed to function as lego blocks, meaning you may study for one Award at a time and build your professional practice as you qualify. The completion of 3 Awards is equivalent to a Level 5 Certificate in Positive Psychology Practice and 5 Awards a Level 5 Diploma in Positive Psychology Practice.

The format of the Awards and Certificate is ideal for professionals who wish to integrate Positive Psychology into an existing people-oriented role. For example, you may be a qualified manager, HR executive, educator, trainer, teacher, psychologist, coach, counsellor, fitness instructor, personal trainer, or sport coach. This course will equip you with the essential knowledge base and skills required to educate your clients (or employees) on Positive Psychology and support them in taking steps to shift from a negative to a more positive state through evidence-based and person-centred interventions.

On this route to becoming a Positive Psychology Practitioner, you may select any or all of the below options:

  • Level 5 Award Strengths Practice
  • Level 5 Award Wellbeing Practice
  • Level 5 Award Resilience Practice
  • Level 5 Award Somatics Practice
  • Level 5 Award Creative Practice

Following successful completion of your course, you will be certified to practice Positive Psychology within the subject area/s of your qualification/s.

Course Format

Our students are adult learners who are often balancing life, home, work, and studies.

They are looking for a part-time online qualification that will enrich their love of learning and prepare them to practice Positive Psychology in an existing role or to set up a private practice. At Level 5, they often want a practical qualification that will help them to understand the basic elements of Positive Psychology and how to apply their knowledge within a professional and/or personal context.

This qualification is delivered by people who are passionate about furthering the field of Positive Psychology.

The course content is delivered online in a user-friendly format with group tutoring support. You will access your course materials through our online learning platform, the Positive Psychology Academy, where you may create a personal profile and connect virtually with other students on this course and other courses.

For further details on the course content, please read on or contact us at: training@ppnetwork.org

Course Timeline & Assessment

After the 6 sessions, you will design your project (a case study intervention with an individual or group relevant to your professional area). You will then submit a project proposal and attend supervision calls while you deliver and evaluate your case study intervention project with voluntary client/s (i.e. they will be aware you are in training and will not be charged a fee for your work with them, and you may deliver this intervention in your current workplace or private practice).

You will be assessed formatively (i.e. no grade) throughout the course via participation in class and online discussion threads, and summatively (i.e. with a grade) through a case study portfolio (3 hours of client session reporting, reflective report on your practice, session recording link with volunteer client consent for trainer observation and feedback) following your intervention. Your portfolio will be due within 1 month of completing your 6-week group course.

Please note group sessions are not recorded so you will need to attend live in order to participate on your course. In between sessions, you will also be given reading material and practical exercises to explore personally and professionally. You will schedule your 1:1 supervision sessions directly with your trainer.

For each Award, it is expected that you will need to set aside 3-5 hours per week for studies during the first 4 weeks (including the sessions) and a further 15-20 hours while you complete your client intervention and portfolio. The total qualification time is estimated at 40 hours.

Common Questions

How many hours of studying a week should I expect?

We estimate 5 hours a week (this includes online sessions) with additional hours during your project assignment development, implementation, evaluation, reporting, and supervision.

How long will it take me to complete this course and certify?

You will complete the group training element of each Award in 4 weeks. Your project intervention will include 3 client-facing hours, preparation, and reporting time as well as 1:1 supervision session time and recorded observations. This will be completed within 1 month of the group training ending.

Your completion timeline for each Award is 2 months. You have up to 3 months to complete an Award project assignment from the date of enrolment (further to this course extension fees will apply).

Can you explain the assignment structure – what is expected of me?

You will write client reports and a reflective practice report on your intervention process. This will include introspection (on self) and case study analysis (on volunteer client). Templates and instructions will be provided for this. Professional writing skills with referencing where relevant will be expected. You will receive an assessment brief.

If it has been a while since you completed a written assignment, please do not worry. Your trainer will be available to guide and support you.

If you have specific learning needs (e.g. English is a second language, dyslexia), please let your trainer know. Our assessment structure allows for individual learning needs.

I’m a dance / yoga / marital arts / mindfulness / movement / meditation teacher – can I apply for this course?

Yes, you may. So long as you are qualified to teach individuals and/or groups in your area of movement, mindfulness, and/or meditation, you may complete this course and integrate Positive Psychology concepts into your practice (e.g. strengths-based approaches to yoga or wellbeing approaches to sport). Please note that if you wish to engage your volunteer clients in movement-based practices, we highly recommend that you are insured to do so.

Will this course qualify me to coach / train / mentor individuals and/or groups?

No. The Level 5 Award courses will qualify you to work with clients (or employees) using Positive Psychology psycho-education and intervention facilitation skills. These are core practitioner skills and you will be taught how to apply them with regard for professional guidelines and practitioner values. If you wish, and if it is appropriate, you may draw on existing professional skills (e.g. coaching, training, mentoring, counselling, management supervision) during your assignment project, however this is not necessary to complete the qualification.

Will the PPG membership package cover me for insurance and liability?

The Professional Membership package includes liability and insurance coverage to practice Positive Psychology within the scope of your qualification in the UK and (currently) Europe. The insurance covers talk-based Positive Psychology psycho-education and interventions (e.g. coaching, training, facilitation, teaching, counseling).

The insurance does not cover exercise, sport, or movement (if this is your existing profession, you will need to have in place relevant insurance coverage here). It also does not cover clinical psychology or counseling areas that extend beyond Positive Psychology (e.g. supporting clients with mental health conditions such as depression, trauma, and anxiety – again, you will need relevant insurance coverage here for these other dimensions of your practice).

For further details on membership, please click here.

Will this course prepare me for a MAPP degree?

This course is set at Level 5. A Masters in Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) is equivalent to Level 7.

The course has a professional rather than academic focus. If you wish to progress to a MAPP degree, we recommend progression onto and completion of the Level 5 Diploma in Positive Psychology Fundamentals first. This course is academic and will prepare you for the rigour of Masters degree assignments and research.

If you hold other qualifications relevant to Positive Psychology (e.g. a Bachelors degree in Psychology at Level 6), you may apply for a MAPP degree on completion of this course. Please check MAPP course entry criteria before doing so as each university will have their own entry requirements as we are not responsible for advising on their behalf.

If you wish to apply for a MAPP degree after your course, you may request an academic reference and set of transcripts from PPG to support your application. Please keep in mind that universities have a separate and independent admissions process.
